As a young Army officer in 1919, Eisenhower took part in the first coast-to-coast military truck convoy across the United States—a gruelling journey that exposed the dire condition of the nation’s roadways. The experience deeply influenced him. Years later, as President, he spearheaded the creation of the U.S. Interstate Highway System—an engineering feat that used more than 1.5 billion tonnes of gravel and sand to form the backbone of American infrastructure.
