The site’s natural subsoil was cohesive with high moisture content, creating challenges for traditional disposal and aggregate importation due to associated environmental and social impacts. The Pr-Ecofill solution addressed these issues by incorporating Ecofill’s drying agent into the soil at predefined addition rates, allowing it to mellow over 72 hours. This process transformed the clay subsoil into a friable material with excellent compaction and significantly increased stiffness, supported by consistent moisture content testing throughout.
The quantifiable impact of the Pr-Ecofill methodology on 2,450m³ of treated material included diverting 4,900 tonnes of clay and subsoil from landfill, eliminating the need to import 5,635 tonnes of aggregate, and reducing 1,244 lorry movements, saving 13.6 tonnes of carbon. Additional benefits included lower levels of air pollutants such as Nitrogen Oxide, PM10, and PM2.5, alongside decreased social disruption, reduced job time, and cost savings.
