Project Details

Kings Park, a scenic development by Barratt David Wilson Homes in Macclesfield, offers a mix of 2, 3, 4, and 5-bedroom homes, with residents benefiting from canal walks, Macclesfield Forest, and a selection of high street shops, independent restaurants, and supermarkets. During construction, the project faced significant challenges due to wet weather conditions, which generated large volumes of unusable surplus materials. Traditionally, Barratt David Wilson Homes relied on prolonged dry periods to naturally dry materials for reuse, but the unpredictable weather often caused delays.

To address these challenges, Ecofill introduced the Pr-Ecofill (Moisture Reduction) service, successfully reducing the moisture content of 2,532m³ of wet material. Using specially formulated Ecofill binders and processing through the Ecofill Machine, Ecofill 75 was produced on-site and applied across a range of construction tasks, including trench backfill and other structural applications.

The Ecofill solution provided substantial commercial benefits, including a 27% reduction in costs. Savings were achieved by reusing on-site wet material instead of removing it and importing aggregate, alongside reduced soils to landfill and a lower reliance on road sweepers and banksmen. Ecofill 75’s extended workability and ability to meet adoptable highway standards represent a significant advancement in construction methods, highlighting the innovative partnership between Barratt David Wilson Homes and Ecofill.

Ecofill 75 offered a workability period of up to six months, providing flexibility for project scheduling, eliminating delays from material deliveries, and minimising traffic disruptions. The product was fully tested and validated by independent UKAS-accredited laboratories, meeting all relevant national specifications, including the Standards for Highways, MCHW Specification, Series 600. Ecofill offered a comprehensive service that included pre-site testing, on-site production, quality control, and overall materials management. The Ecofill Production Supervisor managed the process from start to finish, ensuring that production volumes met the project’s needs effectively.

Comprehensive quality management demonstrated that Ecofill products outperformed traditional unbound aggregates such as 6F2, with plate load tests confirming minimal settlement under cranes and piling rigs
